Wisdom Teeth Extraction

A wisdom teeth extraction is a frequently performed surgical procedure that involves the removal of the wisdom teeth. It’s a common problem, as many wisdom teeth tend to cause crowding, become impacted, or even infected during the growing process. It can lead to swelling, stiffness of the jaw, soreness of the gum, and even difficult biting and swallowing. What to Expect?

For those patients who are undergoing the wisdom teeth extraction, the procedure is typically done under general anaesthetic. Once the wisdom teeth extraction has taken place with the removal of the teeth, the gums are then sutured closed in order to prevent bacteria from getting into the empty cavities left behind and cause further infection. At this point, pain medication would be prescribed in order to deal with the pain, and typically a dentist would recommend that only soft foods be eaten until the sutures are removed or dissolved. Antibiotics will also be prescribed in order to prevent an infection from occurring in the future.

Post Procedure Care

At home, care is also recommended after a wisdom teeth extraction. Using ice packs or heated pads on the face can be used to lessen the pain and make it more bearable. After eating, salt water rinses are definitely recommended in order to reduce swelling, alleviate any discomfort, and remove any food particles from the areas where the sutures are.

A follow-up session with the dentist that performed your wisdom teeth extraction is necessary to check your sutures if they need removal and if any complications have taken place.

The risks associated with a wisdom teeth extraction include a dry socket (where bones ends up being exposed from the dislodging of a blood clot), injury to the nerve of the wisdom teeth, damage to the adjacent teeth, or problems with the temporomandibular joint. Many of these complications are rare and can be treated as soon as they are brought to your dentist’s attention.
